HATS AND MEMORYWhen The Hat Ladies visit assisted living facilities to bring cheer to the residents, we find we are bringing much more. We are restoring their memory of pleasant times as they view our hats and share hat stories. Even persons in the early stages of Alzheimer's Disease can benefit greatly by seeing Ladies in hats and "borrowing" one of ours to put on. They enjoy looking at themselves in the mirror wearing a hat.. This gesture is extremely significant since those with this condition typically avoid mirrors because they don't like what they see. EVERYONE feels good after these visits. Some quotes from administrators of the various facilities we've visited: "Thank you so much for the super time we had with you around Halloween. The one to one time that you shared with us just brightens all our day. Recognition and value something we all need to feel, and you certainly made us feel important. It's fun to literally wear different hats! Thanks again for sharing your goodness with us at quality time. " "After the visit, the residents continually told me how much fun they had. They enjoyed getting up and dancing, and most of all, trying on the hats. I think the visit was a hit. We hope for you all to come back whenever possible. Keep making people smile with the love of your hats. We appreciate your group coming; I think the ay the visit went was wonderful. We have now started our own hat ladies. We'll be meeting once a month. Thanks again for coming and bringing joy to my residents." "Thank you, Hat Ladies, for another successful visit to our Home. Our residents were graciously entertained by exquisitely dressed, properly hatted Ladies. Hats were passed from Hat Lady to resident, and personal information was shared in an atmosphere of genuine sincerity, you could call it 'gentility.' " Amy H., who refers to herself as '92 damn yeas old," moved her feet in rhythm to the promenading music (played by Tony, at a mere 90), while holding on to her walker. The sight of so many beautiful and caring women, handsomely dressed from head to toe, memories of days gone by, music combined with singing and dancing--all led to a sensual experience our residents are still talking about. Thank you again, for a wonderful day." |
