INTERNET TIPS
To protect your email address book, open your address book and
click on "new contact," just as you would do if you were adding a new friend to
your list of email addresses. In the window where you would type your
friend's first name, type in 'A'. For the screen name or email address,
type AAAAAA@AAA.AAA.
The name 'A' will be placed at the top of
your address book as entry #1. This will be where the worm will start in an
effort to send itself to all your friends. When it tries to send itself to AAAAAAA@AAA.AAA,
it will be undeliverable because of the phony email address you entered. If the
first attempt fails (which it will because of the phony address), the worm goes
no further and your friends will not be infected. If an email cannot be
delivered, you will be notified of this in your In Box almost
immediately. Hence, if you ever get an email telling you that an email addressed
to AAAA@AAA.AAAcould
not be delivered, you realize right away that you have the worm virus in your
system and take steps to get rid of it!
Do NOT open an apparently harmless e-mail titled "Here you
have it. If you do, you will lose everything."*
Subsequently you will LOSE EVERYTHING IN YOUR PC, and that person who sent it to
you will gain access to your Name, e-mail and password. This is a new virus
Delete spam messages without opening them or replying to them.
Do not open e-mail attachments unless you know the sender, and you're expecting the attachment.
Use great caution when clicking on links sent to you in an e-mail or text message
Create strong passwords. Use different passwords for your online banking accounts.
Use a firewall, as well as antivirus and antispyware software that is automatically updated.
Beware of web sites requiring your cell phone number to log on (or asking for it during a survey). You risk receiving lengthy, expensive text messages
Read subject matter carefully and do NOT download ANYTHING that seems to come from left field or sounds too friendly! www. Snopes.com can tell you what’s legit
Delete all other addresses when forwarding messages (must first click on “Forward”). And rename subject.
Conceal multiple addresses, by putting a ( before the first name) and a ) after the last name; respect others’ privacy!
Do NOT expect to see anything come across your screen because you followed “directions”
STOP adding your name(s) to those types of listings regardless how inviting they might sound. It’s all about getting email addresses - nothing more! In turn, you will be getting tons of junk mail, some with a virus attached!
Also: E-Mail petitions are NOT acceptable to Congress or any other organization; petitions must have a signed signature and full address, so you are wasting your time and helping the E-Mail trackers.
FINALLY: Emails that say forward this to a certain number of friends, threaten with bad (or good) luck, promise to show something funny, ask you to add your name to a list almost ALWAYS have an E-Mail tracker program being used by the original host sender to use in future SPAM E-mails or to sell to other spammers or telemarketers, or to validate active E-Mail accounts for their own profitable purposes.
