PERSONAL SAFETY
In case of an Earthquake:
1) Most everyone who simply 'ducks and covers' when building collapse are
crushed to death. People who get under objects, like desks or cars, are crushed.
So don't do that!
2) Cats, dogs and babies often naturally curl up in the fetal position.
You should curl up in a fetal position in an earthquake. You can survive
in a smaller void. Get next to an object, next to a sofa, next to a bed, next to
a large bulky object that will compress slightly but leave a void next t it. If
you are in bed, simply roll off.
3). Never stand under a doorway.
4). Never go to the stairs. Even if the building doesn't collapse, stay
away from the stairs. The stairs are a likely part of the building to be damaged
or collapse later.
5.) Get near the outer walls of buildings or outside of them if possible - It is much better to be near the outside of the building rather than the interior. The farther inside you are from the outside perimeter of the building the greater the probability that your escape route will be blocked.
6. If you are in your car, get out and sit or lie next to your vehicle.
If someone confronts you (and to avoid being confronted, in the first place)::
Use triple negatives to destroy linear thinking patterns and distract the aggressor.
In a verbal confrontation try to immediately change the subject matter and misdirect the conversation and allow the peak emotions to die down.
If you are being accosted by a male perpetrator, the female should fake a seizure, throw up, start convulsing, or roll her eyes back to throw off the attacker.
Walk with confidence. It is the single best way to avoid being a target.
Add a whistle to your key chain.
Establish a "security mindset." YOU are part of the security equation.
Know your surroundings. Every environment (neighborhood/business) has unique, routine patterns of activity and generally consistent patterns of behavior associated with the residents/occupants.
Be observant. Establish a mental baseline of routine activity. Report unusual/anomalous behavior, loitering, unattended vehicles, suspicious packages, unusual photography or video taping to law enforcement. For example, allegedly, plastic bottles with explosive substances inside are being left in driveways or mailboxes. Consider calling the police rather than picking them up and throwing them away.
Report attempts to solicit personal information about you or your business.
Maintain a state of “relaxed awareness”, that is, a state where you are cognizant of dangers but not so alert that you are in a constant state of fear or readiness for something bad to happen.
Purchase
a can of wasp spray to keep by your bed or on your desk at work. It can shoot up
to 20'away and is more accurate than pepper spray. Aim for the eyes; it
temporarily blinds an attacker, who will need an antidote to relieve the
effects. A Fire Extinguisher would serve the same purpose.
Also put your car keys beside your bed at night. If you hear a noise outside your
home or someone trying to get in your house, just press the panic button for
your car. The alarm will be set off, and the horn will continue to sound until
either you turn it off or the car battery dies. It works if you park in your
driveway or garage.
And remember to carry your keys while walking to your car in a parking lot. The alarm can work the same way there.
Take home (and destroy) magnetic hotel room keys; they contain personal information that should not fall into anyone else’s hands
To check if a mirror is two-way: Place the tip of your fingernail against the reflective surface. If there is a gap between your fingernail and the image of the nail, then it is a real mirror. However, if your fingernail directly touches the image of your nail, it is a two-way mirror. "No Space, Leave the Place"
TIPS FROM TAE KWON DO
The elbow is the strongest point on your body. If you're close enough to use it, do!
If a robber asks for your wallet/purse, do not hand it to him. Toss it away from him, then run in the other direction
Try to avoid stairwells; take the elevator if there are many others taking it also
Run in a zig zag pattern if a predator has a gun, and you are not under his control. It is very hard to hit a moving target--let alone a vital organ of a moving target
Do not be fooled by a good looking man seeking help or advice; they can be serial killers, too
Do not be fooled by sounds of a baby crying on your doorstep; it may be a recording to get you to open your door
